Where Sound Finds Its Perfect Form

A hall on the UT Austin campus where acoustic precision and musical artistry meet in rare harmony.

About Us

A grand organ installation in Bates Recital Hall.
A grand organ installation in Bates Recital Hall.

Silence here is not empty. It is expectant. Before the first phrase of a sonata rises, before the organ's lowest pipe speaks, Bates Recital Hall holds its breath, and the room itself seems to lean forward.

Part of the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin, this hall has earned a 4.8-star reputation among audiences who know the difference between a room that tolerates music and one that was built to honor it. The acoustics draw consistent reverence from visitors, whether the program calls for a solo piano, a chamber ensemble, or the full resonance of the hall's pipe organ. Every seat is designed for listening, not merely attending.

The address, 2406 Robert Dedman Drive, places the hall within one of the most musically active university campuses in the country. A performance here is not incidental. It is the point.

What We Offer

Bates Recital Hall serves as a premier performance venue for the Butler School of Music's concert season, hosting faculty recitals, student degree recitals, visiting artist programs, and major ensemble performances throughout the academic year.

The hall accommodates a range of musical formats, from intimate solo recitals to chamber and small orchestral programs. Its pipe organ makes it one of the few venues in Austin capable of hosting organ recitals at a serious level. Community organizations and presenting groups have also brought notable performances to this stage, extending its reach beyond the university.

Event listings and ticketing information are available through the Butler School of Music concerts and events portal. Audiences are encouraged to arrive early, both to secure preferred seating and to allow time for campus parking.

"We went there for a musical recital and the acoustics were fantastic, seating was comfortable, and restrooms were clean and well-srocked. Parking is an issue, since it is the UT campus. The parking garage we used charged us double what the posted rate was because it was a performance night."

"Concerts are open seating. The chair spacing is a little tight resulting in people sitting very straight and blocking views a little. Sound resonance is wonderful."
